PGM's Christmas Message 2018

Last Christmas I wrote about just how busy 2017 had been, well there has been no let-up in 2018! We have all been tremendously busy across the Province. As we near the end, our focus has been our Festival appeal.

This year many of you have been walking, cycling, swimming and doing all sorts of crazy things to raise money for our appeal.

We completed the zip wire challenge in North Wales where no less than 90 people travelled all that way to take part and support.

This was really great fun, although there were a few participants who do not have a head for heights!

In October three of us cooked a 7-course dinner for the winner of the Provincial Grand Master Chef Prize Draw.

W. Bro Mike Slack and his guests were treated (?) to a fine dining experience in the comfort of his beautiful home. Both of these initiatives raised enormous sums of money, I am so very grateful to everyone for your support.

Will there be one more challenge before the end of the Festival? Well watch this space, the Festival Committee are trying to convince me to do one more, crazy sponsored event!

As I write we are just 3 ½ months away from when all donations need to be in, unless your or your Lodge or Chapter is making a pledge.

So now is the time to donate what you can to make sure we reach our goal and provide the support that the RMBI so richly deserves.

After all it is this time of year when we all think of those who are less fortunate than ourselves, in particular those who rely on the RMBI for a safe, warm, and friendly home this Christmas.

I am looking forward the Festival Gala Dinner at Guildford Cathedral on Saturday 11th May when we will have the opportunity to celebrate our achievements and take stock of all the hard work you have put in to ensuring the success of our appeal. Please have a look at the Festival website for details.

So, what is in store for the year ahead? We will be promoting ourselves in a new fresh way, with the goal of normalising Freemasonry in the community.

This will involve a new Communications Strategy from Grand Lodge together with a fresh look at how we support local initiatives to ensure we remain relevant in today’s society.

In addition, in the new year we have the roll out of Pathway which is the template for us all to follow in our efforts to recruit and retain members. In the summer we will be holding a family BBQ.

The aim is to have a low-cost event which will be fun for adults and children alike. Full details will be circulated in the new year.

I believe we should all be very proud of everything we do. There is no other members organisation that can boast a support network for its members and the community in the way we do.

I encourage you to talk openly and enthusiastically about being a Freemason.

This Province relies on an army of volunteers, whether they be in a Lodge or Chapter, or in the numerous Provincial roles we depend upon. All are vital to the continued success of this amazing Province.

Thank you for what you do and I wish you and your families a Happy Christmas and peaceful New Year.

Ian Chandler
Provincial Grand Master of Surrey
